    About South Dakota

    South Dakota (pop: 775,933 ) is a Midwestern state named after the Lakota and Dakota (Sioux) American Indian tribes. South Dakota is probably best known as the location of Mount Rushmore.

    Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a Presidential Memorial that represents the first 150 years of the history of the United States of America with the 60-foot (18 m) sculptures of former U.S. Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

    The Great Plains cover most of the western two-thirds of South Dakota. The eastern third is a land of low hills and glacial lakes.

    The state capital is Pierre and the largest city is Sioux Falls with just over 200,000 residents in the greater area.
