    About New Mexico

    New Mexico (pop: 1,928,384), "The Land of Enchantment" is a southwestern state that over its long history has also been occupied by Native Americans, part of the Spain, , a province of Mexico, and a U.S. territory. The landscape ranges from wide, rose-colored deserts to broken mesas to high, snow-capped peaks. Despite New Mexico's arid image, heavily forested mountain wildernesses cover a significant portion of the state.

Industries, largely centered around Albuquerque, include electric equipment, petroleum and coal products, food processing, printing and publishing and stone, glass, and clay products. Defense-related industries include ordnance. Important high-technology industries include lasers, data processing, and solar energy.

    The state capital is Santa Fe and the largest city is Albuquerque.
